2009년에는 국내 최초의 쇄빙연구선인 아라온호가 진수되어 남극과 북극의 결빙지역을 포함한 전 세계 바다에서 해양연구를 수행하고 있다. 건조 비용으로 1000억원이 투입된 아라온호에는 지구물리탐지 및 관츢장비 등 60여 종의 첨단 연구장비를 탑재하고 시속 3노트(약 5.6km)의 속도로 1미터 두께의 얼음을 연속하여 깨면서 나갈 수 있다. 항속거리는 37,000km로 70일 동안 운항이 가능하다. 선체의 길이는 109.5m, 너비 19m이며, 총 6950톤이다. 속도는 평균 12노트에 최소속력 16노트로 85명이 승선하여 연구를 진행하고 있다.

In 2009, the nation's first ice-breaking research vessel-'the Araon' was launched and it is carrying out ocean research at seas around the world including the ice-formation region in the Arctic and Antarctica. It cost about 100 billion won to build 'the Araon', in which 60 sorts of hi-tech research equipment, such as geophysical detection & observation equipment, are installed, and 'the Araon' can move forward breaking ice of 1-meter thickness at the speed of 3 knots(about 5.6km) per hour without stopping. Its cruising range is 37,000km and available for navigation for 70 days. The length of the hull is 109.5m with 19m in width in the class of 6,950 tons altogether. Its average speed is 12 knots with a minimum speed of 16 knots; at present, 85 persons are on board the ship for their research work.
