1996년에는 김영삼 대통령이 21세기 신 해양시대에 대비하기 위해 해운항만청과 수산청, 해양경찰청을 통합하여 종합적인 해양의 이용과 개발 및 보존과 관리를 위해 해양수산부를 신설하여 선진 해양국가 건설을 위한 다양한 정책을 추진하였다. 해양수산부는 2008년 국토해양부와 통합되었다가 해양의 종합적 관리와 해양산업 진흥을 위해 2013년 다시 부활하여 세계 5대 해양강국을 실현을 위한 노력을 계속하고 있다.

The Republic of Korea│Launch of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries
In 1996, President Kim Young-sam promoted diverse polices for constructing an advanced maritime country by newly establishing the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries in preparation for the 21st century new maritime age, and comprehensive use, development, preservation and management of the ocean by integrating the Korea Maritime and Port Administration, the Fisheries Agency and the Korea Coast Guard. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries was integrated with the Ministry of Land, Transport, and Maritime Affairs in 2008, and then in 2013, the Ministry was re-launched for synthetic management of the ocean and promotion of maritime industry, and it is making efforts to realize the world's 5 major maritime powers.
