1893년 고종은 신식 해군을 양성하기 위해 영국 해군 대위 코렐을 초빙하여 국내 최초의 해군사관학교인 통제영학당統制營學堂을 강화도에 설립하였다.

1903년에는 길이 105m, 무게 3천톤, 총 배수량이 3,432톤인 화물선을 전함으로 개조한 최초의 근대식 군함 '양무호揚武號'를 도입하였으며, 1904년에는 총 배수량 1,056톤으로 최신식 3인치 대포 3문을 3개 장착한 광제호光濟號를 도입하였다.

Joseon┃Establishment of Tongjeyeonghakdang and Introduction of New-style Warship
In 1893, King Gojong, in an effort to train the new naval forces, established the nation's first naval academy-Tongjeyeonghakdang at Ganghwado by inviting a British lieutenant in the navy, Corell.

In 1903, Joseon introduced the first modern warship "the Yangmu" which was renovated from a freighter with 105 meters in length, 3,000 tons in weight, and 3,432 tons in gross displacement, and in 1904, Joseon introduced “the Gwangje' with 1,056 tons in total displacement and mounted with 3 units of the three latest 3-inch guns.
