산업혁명의 결과 과학기술이 눈부시게 발전했다. 과학기술의 발전으로 대항해시대를 풍미했던 범선의 시대가 막을 내리고 제임스 와트(1736-1819)가 발명한 증기기관을 미국의 발명가 로버트 폴턴(1765-1815)이 선박에 적용함으로써 증기선의 시대로 접어들게 되었다. 그리고 1843년에는 영국이 스크루 프로펠러를 추진기로 사용하는 최초의 선박인 래틀러호를 진수하였으며, 1892년 노르웨이의 난센이 북극해를 탐험하면서 사용하기도 했다.

With the scientific technology developing, the era of vessels dominating the Era of Exploration closed, and the era of a steamer set in as an American inventor Robert Fulton (1765-1815) applied the steam engine invented by James Watt (1736~1819) to a ship. In addition, in 1843, England launched the first ship named 'Rattler' which used a screw propeller as a propeller in 1843, and in 1892, Nansen in Norway once used it while exploring the Arctic Ocean.
