베니스 출신의 마르코 폴로는 1269년 베니스를 출발하여 콘스탄티노플, 이란을 거쳐 1275년 중앙아시아를 지나 중국의 여러 지역을 여행하고 1295년 귀국하였다. 마르코 폴로는 이때의 경험을 동방견문록에 상세한 기록으로 남겼다. 1299년 출판된 동방견문록은 콜럼버스 등 수 많은 항해탐험가들의 호기심을 자극하며, 대항해시대를 여는데 기여하였다.
