고려 원종 15년인 1274년, 전함 9백 척을 동원하여 원 군사 1만 5천 명을 비롯한 고려 군사와 승조원 약 4만여 명으로 조직된 여원연합군이 일본 원정에 나섰다.
10월 3일 마산을 출발한 여원연합군은 5일 쓰시마對馬島 등 주변 섬들을 치고 10일에는 하카타博多에 상륙하였으나 왜군의 강한 저항으로 인한 무기 부족과 주요 지휘관의 부상 그리고 태풍으로 원정은 실패하였다.
