남극 장보고과학기지는 세종기지(1988년 준공)에 이은 대한민국의 두 번째 남극과학기지다. 남극 대륙 내 빅토리아랜드 테라노바 만의 남위 74도에 위치한 장보고과학기지는 우리나라의 남극 중심으로의 진출에 시발점이 될 전망이다.

그동안 세종과학기지에서는 킹조지 섬 주변의 생태 환경을 중심으로 이뤄졌다. 하지만 2014년부터는 장보고과학기지를 중심으로 빙하 속 3000m 아래의 100만 년 전 기후를 밝혀내는 빙하 연구, 우주에서 날아온 운석을 분석해 지구 탄생의 비밀을 밝히는 연구, 빙하 해빙과 지구 온난화의 연관 관계 연구 등이 본격 진행된다.
