유엔 신해양법협약이 발효되어 200해리의 배타적 경제수역'(Exclusive Economic Zone ; EEZ)을 설정할 수 있게 되었다.

200해리는 약 370km로 한반도를 중심으로 일본, 중국 간에 중복되는 구역이 많아 해양영토 확보를 위한 경쟁이 치열하게 되었다. 독도와 이어도 해역은 당연히 한국의 EEZ로서 그 중요성이 더욱 커졌다.

With effectuation of the UN Convention on the new Law of the Sea, it becomes possible to set up the 200 nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone(EEZ).

200 nautical miles is about 370km, which includes so many overlapping zones between Japan and China around the Korean Peninsula that competition for securing marine territory is expected to be more intense. Dokdo and Ieodo naturally belong to Korea's EEZ, becoming a very important.
