우리 해군은 손원일 제독이 1945년 11월에 해방된 조국의 해안경비를 담당할 해방병단海防兵團을 창설하고 초대 단장에 취임하면서 시작되었다. 1946년 6월에는 조선해안경비대로 명칭이 개칭되었고 1948년 9월 해군으로 편입, 초대 해군참모총장에 손원일 제독이 임명되었다.

ROK Navy began with Admiral Sohn Won-il's foundation of the Coastal Defense Force(Haebangbyungdan) in charge of coastal defense of Korea which was liberated IN November 1945, and his inauguration as the first chief of the corps. In June 1946, it was renamed the Joseon Coastal Guard, and it was incorporated into the navy in September 1948, and Admiral Sohn Won-il was appointed as the first Chief of Naval Operations.
