기원전 480년, 지중해의 패권을 두고 그리스와 페르시아가 벌인 해전이다. 800여 척의 대형 갤리선으로 이루어진 페르시아 함대를 370여 척의 소형 갤리선으로 이루어진 그리스 함대가 살라미스 섬 근처의 좁은 해협으로 끌어들여 침몰시켰다. 살라미스 해전은 역사에 기록된 최초의 대규모 해전으로 그리스가 페르시아를 몰아내고 지중해 제해권을 장악하며 찬란한 문명을 꽃피울 수 있게 되었다.
